A few weeks ago I was waiting in line at the grocery store and the man checking out (who also happened to be the store manager) asked if I wanted to see something. Now, I've seen Creepshow, so I'm leery of that question. But I'm also a curious person so I said, "sure!" He took a mercury dime out of his pocket. He'd almost given it away to a customer when he saw what it was, replaced it with a more current dime and then gleefully looked up prices people have been getting for them on ebay. It's worth about $600.
Today I asked the kid checking my stuff through the line if the manager had been bragging about it to the staff. He'd not heard a thing! Which, yeah, now that I think about it, I probably wouldn't spread news like that either. In fact, I'd told the manager that maybe he shouldn't tell anyone else (in the store) about it. The kid said to me, "so, what's a mercury dime, is that what it's made out of?" I didn't laugh, smirk or snicker, which I think was really good of me since mercury is toxic and will KILL you! I explained that Mercury was a Greek guy and that's whose face is on the dime, then I grabbed my stuff and ran.
Jeez. :)
