A good friend requested fiction to keep her occupied while she recuperates from surgery, this is what came to me today.

For Lor

The day had dawned like a brilliant blue bowl overhead. The breezes stirred the leaves of grass as she passed, keeping to the drier parts of lawn to save her shoes. The ache in her knee grew with each step, but she ignored it and refused to slacken her pace. It felt good to walk, arms swinging, the early hour making her smile. A few steps under a tree and she was being castigated by squirrels, chattering loudly in their outrage that she dared come close to their territory. Her smile merely grew as she craned her head, looking for them and laughing when a bushy tail, twitching with outrage, disappeared up a tree.

She shook her head and moved on, now past a house with rose bushes lining the fence around the yard. The roses there always bloomed longer than roses anywhere else. They were a soft pink and had no scent, but they were a joy to see now that the Spring flowers had died off and the Summer flowers had yet to bloom. She paused to rub away a particularly sharp ache when she reached the corner, waiting for the light so she could cross.

She didn't really have time for this walk, work was set to start in a mere five minutes and she was still fifteen minutes away on her walk. Still, there was no reason to panic, right, just because she was going to be late? There was this morning to enjoy and it would be a waste to squander enjoyment of it on fretting. A frisson of worry did wiggle its way into her mind, however, as if she were helpless against its assault on her nerves. She sighed and stepped up her pace, anxious now, despite her own admonitions to not worry. It had always been her nature.

The sounds around her seemed to disappear, save those of car engines and car horns. It seemed like now that she was free of the residential area and the squirrel chatter and birdsong, all the sounds that were left were those of a busy city, impatient to get the day underway. She gave a sigh as she walked and resigned herself to it and walked faster, limping visibly now.
