I figured out last week that I have an allergy to wheat. I'd always kind of wondered and a few years ago the allergist said that wheat allergies are very common. I didn't get tested because my insurance doesn't cover allergy tests and we're talking about $800. Yikes! Anyway, I've known for some time that I have all kinds of environmental allergies (don't even TRY to smoke around me) and I've taken care of that by separating myself from animals and a dusty, moldy old house.
And yet I've still been getting sick. We're talking bronchitis and sinusitis more than once a year. I couldn't figure it out. I'm in this new place, which I keep spanking clean. WTF? One night last week we ordered Papa John's pizza, two of them. I gorged myself since it's been quite sometime since I had pizza. Later I felt full, bloated, cloggy headed. Expected things, right, after a large meal?
Well, so, the next morning I woke up and was all excited (yes, embarrasssingly enough, food excites me) about getting cold pizza for breakfast. I ate two slices and couldn't get myself up off the couch. I had to head to bed and I'd just gotten up! I was a wreck the rest of the day. And then it finally dawned on me that the reason my allergies never seem to subside is that I feed them constantly, all because I love bread in any form.
My life has changed dramatically since then. No more toast, or sandwiches, no more breading or cereal bars. No cakes, brownies or cookies made from wheat. It wasn't bad at first. Kind of a new adventure, trying to figure out what I can have and can't. I'm hungry all the time because I'm not someone who has lived off fruit as a main staple.
Today the denial set in. And the cravings. I wanted a donut, toast, all of the things I can longer have. I gave in, got Captain D's for lunch. I two piece of fish and half the breading on them and one of the hush puppies and the headache and itchy eyes were instantaneous. *sigh*
While I was bread free I was clear-headed. I do think there are other allergies I have. Oddly enough I seem to be able to eat cooked corn, but popcorn sets off my allergies. Still experimenting with other foods to see if they are triggers. At least I know that fruit is completely allowable. I always feel good eating apples and bananas and stuff.
*crosses fingers*
