They brought the air conditioner back!
The next door neighbor knocked on the door yesterday and asked, "did you know you that there's an air conditioner on the ground behind your truck?" I dashed outside to look and sure enough, it was laying there, the front torn open. I ran back in, told Mark and he smirked, "I wondered if they'd be able to get it to work." Apparently, when it died last month, he really had to coax it to get it to work again. And he did again yesterday, but funny thing is, it's working better now than then!
Now as to why I think we got the thing back. I walked around the neighborhood with the a/c remote in my hand. My thinking was that if I saw it, I would turn it off (to be sure) and then tell Mark where we could find it. No way was I confronting anyone on my own! I also wanted to ask people what they knew.
I didn't see anyone, but on my way back, I saw an old gentleman sitting on his porch, so I asked him if he'd seen anything, but he's been in the hospital, so he didn't know. But the people I suspect live next door to him and one of them is his grand daughter. And he was outraged that anyone would take an air conditioner out of a person's window.
Later in the day I looked out to see who was around and the next door neighbor (the one who told me about where to find the a/c) was home. She took me around to the other neighbors, who all exclaimed about the outrageousness of stealing someone's a/c like that.
So, in other words, I believe it was neigborly solidarity that got me my unit back. And perhaps someone's guilty conscience, because the unit could have been dropped anywhere, not just brought back to me. In any case, I'm glad that with this break in, I didn't lose anything. And determined to keep an eye out in the future.
