At the grocery store she found me a Hayden Christensen movie she says is quite good, then brought me a small tube of SW M&Ms. All in total innocence, which makes it even more evil! I think she's being lead by the dark side...
My Father, Grandpa Hook and Grandma Dorothy were all buried in Bellefontaine Cemetary (pronounced bell-fountain)in St Louis. Today we visited their graves to put flowers on them. This was the first time I've been back since Dad was buried. Fortunately, this time I wasn't a wreck. I had a wreath of yellow roses with a "Father" banner stretched across it. Grandma and Grandpa both got pink silk roses. And I have to say, I much prefer getting a bundle from Old Time Pottery, compared to the arrangements they sell that are particularly for Memorial Day. They just look cheerier, fuller.

It's a beautiful cemetary, with several famous people buried there, including William Clark. Grandpa Hook is buried just down the hill from the Anheuser mausoleum. So the view is quite picturesque. I've looked in the Anheuser mausoleum before, it's tiled inside with the Anheuser logo and the windows are stained glass. They keep it locked, of course, most likely because of vandals. Although Grandpa had said, a long time ago when he took us to where he had chosen his plot, that it used to be kept unlocked.

The cemetary is set up in an exasperating pattern of curving roads that seem to lead you one place and then you end up in another. Which is how we ended up wheeling around in the car for an hour, trying to find the place. And this even after visiting the sexton and obtaining a map! We were pretty freaking worn out when we finally found his grave, so we pretty much just set the flowers down, had a minute to remember and left. It was Dad and Grandma Dorothy's graves where we spent the most time; cleaning off bird poop, awwwing over the dog who took a nap right on top of Dad's grave (he adored that dog.)

It was a beautiful day, and even with getting lost, we didn't get cranky once. I think the need to see the graves, out-weighed the inconvenience of getting to them. And Dad's grave is in a lovely spot, high on top of a hill. It feels right. Which is hard to explain, I suppose. But I do feel better, now that I've been there. :)
