AS I was watching this movie the other night, I was struck by something. Alfred Hitchcock's use of hands to display emotion. Eva Marie Saint's hands on Cary Grant's neck, the way one face covered the other, so you couldn't see the unsexy closed mouth kiss they were forced to engage in, because of the censors... It was fascinating to see how the use of hands further played into the story. There was James Mason, his left hand possessively caressing the shoulder of his mistress, then the hand being pulled away as he discovered unfaithfulness. The final hand scene was Cary Grant pulling EMS into the bunk on the train, finally conveying protection, love, a sense of home. Or at least that's how I saw it.
