I have a confession to make

I never even thought of slash as anything that interested me until I read my first slash story. It was written by [livejournal.com profile] rahaliacat and had Curt Wild and Christian from Moulin Rouge. It shouldn't have worked, two more different movies I can't imagine. But it did and it sparked in me the desire for more. So, after going through Rahalia's stock of fiction as it existed at that time, I was lead to [livejournal.com profile] splix and Provocateur. Awesome story. I truly couldn't praise it more, and more verbose people that I have done so, and so much, that I risk being redundant. ;)

So, between these two ladies a new fandom was born for me. But I'm odd in my obsession. I'm one of the few slashers who actually doesn't watch a movie, TV series, ect. and think about how I can slash the characters together. Like, I still don't see Kirk/Spock as slashy. I see them as the deepest of friends, but really don't picture them as lovers. Then again, I haven't sought out Trek slash, my opinion could easily be changed, I'm certain.

It's the fandoms that convinces me. Qui/Obi? Had to read a TPM story first (one of Alex's) and then was led to the M_A archive, which I began to voraciously devour. I was writing my own slash at this point. A (still) wip called Fading which had; het, gay sex and hints of lesbianism. You know, like the movie? *g*

I've had more luck with rps. In fact, rpg rps. There's a freedom there that doesn't exist in core fandoms like SW. With rps you can make the characters be and do anything you want them to be and do, and not be constrained by the universe that houses them. Even AU core fandom stories have certain rules. The main one being that you pretty much had better damn well be able to recognize the character as he exists in ST, SW, MR, or whatever. Otherwise you lose your audience right off the bat because he's not behaving as you expect him to. Qui should normally be the older, more experienced character, for instance.

And to a certain extent you also have this with rps. But the guy really only needs to look and sound like you expect, otherwise you're free to put him in whichever setting you choose. A boys school, for instance (referring again to something of which Rahalia has a part in.) Or maybe Ewan McGregor as a prostitute (is this such a stretch? ;))

Now don't think I'm saying rps is better than fps. I wouldn't presume! For one thing, I don't believe any particular fandom is better than another. For me, if it sparks the imagination, fuels fantasy and creates the need to daydream, then its a good thing. Whether we're talking about Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui Gon Jinn or Jurgen Prochnow and Ben Browder. Does the story satisfy you? Isn't that what we should want the most, as writers and readers?

So yeah, I'm a late bloomer slasher. But now at least I can begin to see the connections, sometimes. Like, I might be interested in something between John Crichton and Scorpius, or Fred Mertz and Ricky Ricardo. But hey, doesn't Errol Flynn and Howard Hughes make you think lascivious thoughts? Oh wait, that might not be rps, cause I'm thinking of Leonardo and Jude as the actors who played them. Maybe, hmm, Dan Rather and George Bush? It's just creepy enough to work. *g*

Chug, chug, chug

The old brain just keeps cranking along, keeping me awake. I need to get tired. Now. The brain says, "no wait, I wanna see if anyone posted anything interesting in the last nanosecond."

It's time to get serious. It's time to break out the secret weapon. *looks shiftily around* Mahjong solitaire. Shh! Keep it secret. It might not work if all of us insomniacs used it.
